A Renewed Assault On The Eastern Front

Hitler and Mussolini's Secret Meeting in Salzburg

A Renewed Assault on the Eastern Front

Background:

In April 1942, the Axis powers were facing setbacks on the Eastern Front. The German army had been stalled at the gates of Moscow, and the Soviet counter-offensive had begun to push them back. Meanwhile, the Italian army had been routed in North Africa, and the British were advancing on Libya.

The Meeting:

In an attempt to coordinate their efforts, Hitler and Mussolini met in Salzburg on April 28, 1942. The meeting was secret, and the details of their discussions were not released to the public. However, it is known that they agreed to launch a renewed assault on the Eastern Front.

The Outcome:

The Axis powers launched their renewed assault on the Eastern Front in June 1942. The German army was reinforced with fresh troops, and the Italians were given command of the southern sector of the front. However, the offensive quickly bogged down, and the Soviets were able to hold their ground. The failure of the Axis offensive marked a turning point in the war. It showed that the Axis powers were no longer able to defeat the Soviet Union, and it led to a gradual shift in the balance of power in favor of the Allies.
