The move follows allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior by Thomas, which have shadowed him in recent years.
In a public statement on Friday, Thomas denounced the "nastiness and the lies" that have plagued his reputation. However, the allegations have continued to cast a shadow over his career, prompting Ocasio-Cortez to initiate impeachment proceedings.
The articles of impeachment accuse Thomas of "high crimes and misdemeanors," including violating his oath of office and engaging in conduct that brings the judiciary into disrepute. Ocasio-Cortez cited allegations that Thomas engaged in inappropriate sexual behavior with women, including Anita Hill, who testified against him during his 1991 confirmation hearings.
Thomas, who was born in Pin Point, Georgia, has served on the Supreme Court since 1991. He is known for his conservative views and his consistent support of the Bush administration's anti-terrorism policies.
